Blepharoplasty
What Is Blepharoplasty?
How Does a Blepharoplasty Procedure Work?
Upper Eyelid
An upper eyelid blepharoplasty addresses sagging upper eyelids that can make you look tired or limit your field of vision. Before the surgery, we offer general anesthesia and IV sedation to ensure a comfortable, painless procedure.
Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Zavell, will begin the upper eyelid procedure by making an incision along your eyelid crease. He will then trim away excess skin and tighten the remaining tissue through the incision. Dr. Zavell will close the incision with ultra-fine sutures to further tighten the skin and minimize visible scarring.
It is not uncommon for patients whose upper eyelids are troubling them to also be impacted by excess fat or tissue under the eyes. We can determine if completing both upper and lower eyelid procedures during a single surgery is appropriate for your case.
Lower Eyelid
A lower eyelid blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags by removing fat deposits that give you a sunken or aged look. As with upper eyelid surgery, our Toledo practice offers general anesthesia and IV sedation to ensure your comfort. Dr. Zavell will start the process by creating an incision on the inside or outside of your eyelid. For patients with less pronounced under-eye bags, an incision inside the eyelid allows unwanted fat deposits to be removed more easily.
If your lower eyelid is affected by excess skin, your surgeon may recommend outside lower eyelid surgery to correct sagging skin. A small incision is made below the lower lash line with lower eyelid surgery. Once Dr. Zavell redistributes or removes fat deposits affecting your lower lids, you will achieve the rejuvenated but natural-looking appearance you desire.

Will I Have Scars?
Scarring after eyelid surgery is typically minimal. Once healing is complete, most patients have only faint hairline scars. Incisions for upper eyelid surgery will be made following the natural folds and creases of your skin, greatly reducing the appearance of scars. Lower eyelid surgery scars are similarly hidden, either inside the eyelid or near the lash line.

Insurance Coverage & Blepharoplasty Cost
Eyelid surgery costs will be unique to every patient's situation.
If drooping skin is impeding your vision, insurance will often cover the cost of upper eyelid surgery. Dr. Zavell will conduct a visual field test to determine if your eyesight has become significantly impaired by sagging eyelids and excess skin.
Out of pocket, the average price of elective blepharoplasty ranges between $3,000 and $4,000. Our Ohio practice charges a $75 consultation fee. This fee will go toward the cost of your procedure if you decide to move forward with surgery.
To help manage costs, we offer financing options through CareCredit®, M-Lend Financial, and Directions Credit Union. To find out exactly what the cost of treatment may be for your case, contact our office.
