Depending on their size and appearance, moles and other types of lesions can cause embarrassment. In some cases, these growths indicate skin cancer.
Fortunately, lesion and mole removal are simple medical procedures that can be done in-office. An experienced dermatologist can address the concern in about five minutes to an hour, and you’ll be left with only a small scar.

Is My Mole
To keep an eye on lesions that might be indicative of skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests practicing “the ABCDEs of melanoma.” This process involves asking several questions about your skin and the mole:
Practicing these observations at home on a regular basis can help you determine if you should be worried about your cosmetic blemish and whether it should be removed through surgery or another type of care. However, the only sure way to determine if a mole is malignant is to undergo an evaluation and in some cases, get a biopsy from a doctor who’s experienced in aesthetic care and dermatology. Dr. Zavell is a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 20 years of experience assessing and removing various types of lesions throughout the body.
When you visit our dermatologist, the first step is often to biopsy the area. This will allow Dr. Zavell to determine if it is a sign of melanoma or not. Regardless of the outcome, many of our patients choose to proceed with treatment.
Next, Dr. Zavell can remove the lesions in one of two ways. The first treatment option is surgical excision. For this procedure, Dr. Zavell will numb the area, then use a scalpel or a sharp, circular blade to carefully remove the mole and some healthy skin around it. After it is removed, the area is stitched closed.
The other removal option is a surgical shave. This medical procedure is usually performed on smaller moles. After numbing the area, your doctor will use a small blade to shave off the mole and some tissue beneath it. Stitches are usually not needed after this treatment.
Dr. Zavell and his incredible staff were so helpful during my surgery. Dr. Zavell is extremely supportive, knowledgeable and efficient. His sense of humor helped put my nerves at ease. Highly recommend.

Aftercare following the removal of a mole or another type of lesion is fairly simple. Make sure to keep the wound clean, moist, and covered. It’s important to note that you may develop a small scar but Dr. Zavell uses precise techniques to minimize this effect.
