Fat deposits in your hips, stomach, or other areas can sometimes resist even the most committed diet and exercise.
Liposuction can eliminate unwanted fatty tissue so that you can have the lean contours you desire.
Dr. John F. Zavell, serving Sandusky, Findlay, and Toledo, OH, is here to help you achieve your goals using this safe and effective procedure...
Is Liposuction Permanent?
How DOES LIPOSUCTION WORK?
Liposuction enhances certain areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits. This gives patients a figure that is slimmer, with improved contours and proportions. It can be used to remove fat from the thighs, hips and buttocks, abdomen and waist, upper arms, back, inner knee, chest area, cheeks, chin and neck, calves, and ankles. Lipo can be performed alone or along with another plastic surgery procedure, such as a tummy tuck or breast reduction.
Traditional lipo only requires small, inconspicuous incisions. A thin tube called a cannula is inserted to loosen and dislodge excess fat. This fat is then suctioned out through the cannula. Dr. Zavell in Toledo uses either VAERlipo or tumescent liposuction.
He also offers CoolScultping®, a nonsurgical method that works by freezing fatty tissue rather than relying on suction. This essentially destroys the fat cells, which are then naturally expelled by the body. Although this approach cannot remove as much fatty tissue as surgical liposuction in a single treatment session, it can be an excellent solution for patients who wish to shed unwanted fat without having to undergo an invasive surgical procedure. During a consultation, Dr. Zavell can help determine which approach to fat removal is the best for your needs.
The length of the surgery depends on which areas of the body are being treated, as well as how much fat is being removed and how many areas are being treated.
Before & AFTER
Candidacy FOR LIPO
Close to Ideal Weight
Patients should be within 20 pounds of their goal weight to seek liposuction. During this body contouring surgery, enough fat is removed to flatten an area, but some fat is left to maintain a smooth contour and avoid loose skin. Losing significant weight after lipo can result in surface irregularities, bumps, and loose hanging skin. It is also possible to gain weight after liposuction. Regular diet and exercise can help you maintain your results for many years.
Be in Good Health
To undergo liposuction, patients should be in generally good health. They should also not have any conditions that may inhibit healing. In addition, candidates should be nonsmokers. Before recommending liposuction, Dr. John F. Zavell will conduct a thorough analysis of your medications and health history to make certain you can safely undergo the procedure.
Have Realistic Goals
It’s important to note that this is not a weight loss surgery, and it is not recommended for treating cellulite. Dr. Zavell will discuss your goals and help you determine which procedure or combination of procedures will help you meet those goals. As Dr. Zavell's patient, you can expect honest recommendations based on what he believes is the surest way to achieve your desired results.

Commonly COMBINED PROCEDURES
While this procedure is effective on its own, it can also be combined with other services at our Toledo office for more pronounced results:
Liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) are commonly combined. A tummy tuck tightens stretched skin and repairs separated muscles in the abdomen. Liposuction is used in conjunction with the procedure to remove excess fat.
By combining lipo with a breast lift, you can achieve a bust line that is perkier, providing a better complement to your figure.
Liposuction is often incorporated into facelift surgery. This combination can remove fatty tissue under the chin to give your face improved definition.
Liposuction is performed using small incisions of about half an inch each. Wound care consists of changing pads in the first few days and wearing a compression garment. You may return to nonstrenuous work in as little as 2-3 days and resume more intensive exercise routines in about two weeks.
Your body will respond to liposuction by swelling. This is part of the healing process. Bruising is also normal and will resolve in the weeks following your surgery.
Most patients will begin to see results in one to two weeks, but the final results will become apparent in the weeks that follow as swelling and bruising subsides.
Pregnancy, aging, and weight loss can all affect the end results. If you are committed to a healthy lifestyle and do not plan to become pregnant after your procedure, you can expect your results to last many years.
Cost OF LIPO
The average cost of liposuction is about $3,500. The cost of your plastic surgery depends on:
- How many areas are being treated
- How long it will take
- What kind of sedation will be used
Because this procedure is cosmetic, insurance will not contribute to the cost. Fortunately, our Toledo office offers financing options through CareCredit®, M-Lend Financial, and Directions Credit Union. During your appointment at our Toledo office, our patient care coordinator will explain your options to you.
