A Masculine Physique is within Reach
Gynecomastia is a condition in men characterized by excess breast tissue that can cause physical discomfort and often leads to poor body image. If you feel self-conscious about the size of your breasts and cannot reduce fat through routine diet and exercise, Dr. John F. Zavell can provide surgical male breast reduction at his Toledo, OH, practice. During this procedure, Dr. Zavell will use advanced techniques to remove excess tissue and contour your chest for a more masculine physique.

Are You a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
If you suffer from excess breast tissue on one or both sides of the chest, you can benefit from gynecomastia surgery. This procedure is intended for healthy male patients who have been unable to decrease the size of their breasts through diet and exercise. For the best results, you should be at or near your goal weight before undergoing surgery.
The Treatment Process
There are several techniques designed to eliminate excess tissue and fat deposits. The method used to achieve this goal will depend on your needs. In some cases, liposuction may be sufficient. In other instances, Dr. Zavell may also need to remove excess skin and tissue, as well.
During the procedure, small incisions are made around the breast area. Dr. Zavell then uses a cannula to carefully remove fat. If necessary, an incision is created around the perimeter of the nipple so that skin and glandular tissue can be removed. In some cases, Dr. Zavell may also reposition the nipple for a more aesthetically pleasing outcome. The incisions are then carefully closed with sutures.
Your Recovery
After surgery, you may receive a compression garment which will support the recently adjusted tissues. Discomfort, swelling, and bruising are all normal aspects of healing.
To maintain the results of your treatment, you must eat a well-balanced diet and implement a routine exercise regimen.
It is important to avoid all strenuous activities for at least two weeks after surgery, as this can pull incisions open and leave you vulnerable to infection. If you work in an office, you can typically return to work within a week or so. However, if your job is more physically demanding, you may need to take up to two weeks off. You should also limit sun exposure to allow incision sites to heal properly and reduce scarring.
Maintaining Your Results
To maintain the results of your treatment, you must be dedicated to eating a well-balanced diet and implementing a routine exercise regimen. If you gain a significant amount of weight after the procedure, it could undermine the effects of treatment.
Insurance & Financing
While many patients with gynecomastia suffer from emotional or psychological issues related to their condition, many insurance companies still view male breast reduction as a strictly cosmetic procedure. Unfortunately, this means that unless there is severe pain or the possibility of a cancerous tumor, your insurance policy will not cover this treatment. However, our practice also accepts financing through several institutions, including CareCredit®, M-lend Financial, and Directions Credit Union to make this procedure affordable.
