Restore Balance to Your Nose with Rhinoplasty
Dr. John F. Zavell performs rhinoplasty at his Toledo, OH, cosmetic surgery practice for patients who are concerned with the appearance of their nose or need to correct a deviated septum. Each rhinoplasty procedure is designed to treat your specific concerns. We will provide you with highly-detailed images during your consultation to allow you to preview your changes and make certain we understand what you want to achieve. A rhinoplasty can be performed on its own or in addition to other facial cosmetic procedures to treat multiple aesthetic concerns at the same time.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures nationwide. During the surgery, Dr. Zavell will carefully sculpt the cartilage and bone of your nose to achieve a more symmetrical, aesthetic facial composition. The procedure is a frequently performed, relatively low-risk, and very effective cosmetic procedure that can also address health concerns such as difficulty breathing.
Dr. Zavell performs both open rhinoplasty (between the nostrils) and closed rhinoplasty (through the nostrils) and will explain the risks and benefits of each during your initial consultation. Our office will administer either general anesthesia or IV sedation during the procedure. Dr. Zavell will remove a conservative amount of cartilage and bone, while still delivering dramatic results.
During open rhinoplasty, Dr. Zavell makes a small incision on the underside of your nose between the nostrils. Although this technique can result in a more noticeable scar, it can allow the surgeon greater access to the cartilage and bone that is being reshaped.
Unlike open rhinoplasty, during closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nose through the nostrils. There is less scarring associated with this technique and most cosmetic issues can be concealed through a closed procedure.
What Issues Can Rhinoplasty Address?
Whether you have minimal or multiple concerns with your nose, rhinoplasty can address a variety of issues:
- Proportion: If you feel that your nose is too large or too small compared to your other facial features, rhinoplasty can provide facial balance and symmetry.
- Width: A nose or nostrils that are too wide can be modified for a more proportionate appearance.
- Profile: If the bridge of your nose has a hump or depression, rhinoplasty can provide a smoother bridge.
- Tip: If the tip of your nose is not to your liking, Dr. Zavell can reshape the tip into the contour you desire.
In addition to treating cosmetic concerns, a rhinoplasty can help patients who have structural defects that cause breathing problems. In order to restore normal function to the nose, Dr. Zavell can perform a septoplasty or turbinate surgery in conjunction with your rhinoplasty. Following your recovery, you can enjoy enhanced symmetry, shape, and size, as well as health benefits if you suffer from a deviated septum.
Your Consultation and Surgery
During your initial consultation, Dr. Zavell will talk to you about your options. You will be shown a preview of what your nose can look like following the surgery, and we will make adjustments as necessary until you are satisfied with the potential outcome. A chin implant may be recommended as part of your procedure to create more symmetry if you suffer from an under-pronounced chin.
From your initial consultation to your recovery, Dr. Zavell will personalize your treatment and thoroughly discuss your options and desired outcomes with you.
How long your surgery will take varies from patient to patient, as well as on the severity of the concerns. A rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure and most patients are able to return home the same day of their surgery.
Recovering from Rhinoplasty
Careful recovery is one of the best ways to ensure that your results are maintained. Dr. Zavell will discuss post-operative instructions with you, such as prescriptions and recovery routine, prior to your surgery. During the first several weeks following your surgery, you should expect tenderness and bruising and should avoid any direct contact with the nose. Patients should schedule and attend all follow-up appointments to ensure proper recovery.
